This week brings a first run review presently in your neighborhood theaters, an obscure Netflix rental that can be seen instantly and an oldie, but goodie for the whole family.
Slumdog Millionaire - Run don't walk to your theater to see this great movie. It is receiving wonderful reviews and awards and rightly so. The story is told in a unique fashion set in present day India with lots of flashbacks. The characters are well developed and endearing and although rough in parts (India wasn't the best country to be born in especially if you were poor. orphaned and homeless) it is worth the viewing. The movie is a long, but you are engaged throughout. I believe this will receive the academy award for best foreign film and it might even be in the running for best picture of the year.
Finding Amanda - This film was in theaters for a short time and I can tell you why, it isn't worth anyone's time. Matthew Broderick is a wonderful theater actor, but somehow that never translated onto the big screen except for perhaps Ferris Bueller. His talents are wasted in this movie about him finding his niece in Las Vegas. Both of them are flawed characters and the movie never captures your buy into them. Even though you could see this instantly on Netflix, don't bother.
Cars - I never did see this animated movie in the theater or rent it from Netflix, but when I saw it was on the Disney Channel, I decided to tape it and watch it. To my dismay, I didn't tape it long enough, but since it is not high literature, it was not hard to figure out the ending. It holds the interest of adults and children alike. Lots of inside car jokes. And a good message for children and adults to consider. Good starting point for discussions with children i.e. the demise of the small town, the value of friendship, etc. So if your child is off from school or your grandchildren are coming for a visit, this is a good, safe film for all to enjoy. As an aside, Cars 2 is scheduled to open in 2011.
In the meantime, enjoy the movies.

Roberta, I saw Slumdog Millionaire last week. Wow. I was very glad about a couple of things...
1. We watched the Bollywood-style dance in the credits.
2. We went to dinner afterward and discussed the movie. It's not one to watch and then go home to bed! Lots to chew on in this movie.
