This is a slow week for me as I've only seen one movie, but did see a local theatrical offering as well.
Henry and June - A little background first; Last week Sy and I were watching a show on an obscure TV station that dealt with censorship. It was quite fascinating and as they talked about various movies, they discussed the NC-17 (no child under 17 allowed) rating. This rating is one directors and producers do not want at any cost as it eliminates a large part of their audience. Well the first movie I believe that received this rating was Henry and June. Sy in particular wanted to see what the hubbub was about so we ordered it. In the Netflix summary, they said how it was a masterpiece and groundbreaking,. Once again I guess I am too regular to have seen its brilliance. It is the story of Henry Miller and his relationship with the diarist Anais Nin and his wife June. It was quite erotic, but even the sex didn't hold mine or Sy's interest for long. It was very SLOOOOOW. The acting was quite good, but the story could have been told in 90 minutes, not 2 hours and 17 minutes. It would be interesting to note where Uma Thurman was in her career at this time as she has numerous nude and erotic scenes. The movie was filmed in 1990 and I believe the NC-17 rating is non-existant today. On my scale, I would give it .
Forbidden Broadway - Today we went to the local theater and saw this off Broadway play. As a person who love musicals and the lyrics of songs, I loved this. What they have done is take songs from popular Broadway shows and changed the lyrics - for example an over the hill Annie sings 'Tomorrrow" lamanting she had done the role for ten years. If you like a light, fun show - no hidden meaning, no deep thoughts see this if it comes to a performing company near you.
I thought I'd also add my two cents about some TV offerings I have found entertaining.
The Starter Wife - I always liked Debra Messing on Will and Grace and one Friday night I saw this show advertised. It is on USA which is a cable station. I starting watching it about a month ago. It is quite entertaining; sort of a dramedy. The supporting cast is good and the story line a bit soap operaist, but fun. Give it a try. On the east coast it is on 10:00 p.m. on Fridays. You can catch up on the episodes online on USA. http://www.usanetwork.com/series/starterwife/video/fullep/
Dancing With The Stars - For those of you who know me well, you know I've been a fan of this show since its second season. Although at times I think it is rigged, I truly enjoy the wonderful dancing. To that end, I just wanted to say that I believe that Brooke Burke should win the trophy this year. See if my prediction comes true. The last official episode is Monday at 8-9:30 on ABC and the results show is the following night at 9:00.
Someone told me recently I had too much time on my hands to do this, but I love entertainment and just want to share my passion with my friends. So enjoy the movies, theater and TV.
Happy Thanksgiving All
